I often find that I have too many resources late in the game that I’m willing to trade to reduce enemy difficulty. If you do everything and clear each tile, you will be fighting the hardest possible version of those monsters, especially since clearing tiles takes time and more disaster cards are added based on the timer. The thing is, every time you fight, the monster gets upgraded as a scourge card, so your pick and choice of battle are actually pretty important. You fight monster destruction on tiles and tackle them to get resources for crafting. It may not look like it on the surface, but in many ways, Wildermyth is a resource management game. Much better is recruiting villagers using inheritance points whenever you get the chance, allowing you to naturally level up backup characters as you progress in the campaign. When they do, their children often take their place, but these adventurers are inexperienced and have trouble dealing with late-game enemies. In the game’s five-chapter campaigns, it’s almost inevitable that some characters will retire.
Controlling your monsters’ movements and scoring them means you can handle them one by one to avoid being overwhelmed. Mystic can also interfere with objects so you pin enemies in place, you can equip a throw net to your character, or Archers can gain trap abilities to stop enemies from advancing.

This is why overriding abilities like Archer’s ambush and Warrior’s sentinel are so powerful, especially if you choose to upgrade which means they block enemy movement when activated. When fighting a horde of powerful monsters, you can easily be overwhelmed. Retirement age can also be increased through side quests and narrative events. his strongest at the most difficult time of the campaign.
In an escalating difficulty campaign, one of the hardest things to manage is the retirement of your heroes, because if they leave before the end of the campaign, you may lose strong characters. But you can also change their three defining hooks, change their stats, and, more importantly, their retirement age.
